Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, also known as winter cherry) is one of the most valuable herbs in Ayurveda. Traditional texts describe ashwagandha as an effective rasayana, whose balancing and nourishing properties are particularly beneficial for strengthening the mind.

Its taste is bitter and astringent. According to Ayurveda, it reduces Vata and Kapha doshas. Ashwagandha is a species in the nightshade family and has oval leaves and reddish, balloon-like flowers. In Ayurvedic teachings, it holds a similarly important place to ginseng in China. The botanical name “Withania somnifera” is derived from the words Withan (scientist) and somnifera (sleep-inducing). Ashwagandha tablets are made from the dried roots of Withania somnifera.
